Detectors for particle identification

چکیده

The paper reviews recent progress in particle identification methods. A survey of motivations and requirements for particle identification in various experimental environments is followed by the main emphasis, which is on the recent development of Cherenkov counters, from upgrades of existing devices to a novel focusing radiator concept and new photon detectors. The impact of including a precise measurement of the time of arrival of Cherenkov photons to increase the kinematical region over which particle identification can be performed is discussed. The progress in dedicated time-of-flight counters with recently developed very fast single photon detectors is also evaluated. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Particle Detector R&d

Recent results on the particle detector R&D for new accelerators are reviewed. Different approaches for the muon systems, hadronic and electromagnetic calorimeters, particle identification devices, and central trackers are discussed. Main emphasis is made on the detectors for the International Linear Collider and Super B-factory. A detailed description of a novel photodetector, a so called Sili...

Review of Recent Progress in the Development of Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detectors*

In the late 1970’s Ypsilantis and Seguinot’l proposed an extension of the classic binary ‘yes/no” Cerenkov counter to a new kind of particle identification system, with large dynamic range, robust performance and the potential to perform in the “heavy traffic” of the multi-particle jet environment. These new detectors were called Ring Imaging Cerenkov (RICH) counters21 or Cerenkov Ring Imaging ...

Performance of the LiF-TEA Ring Imaging CherenkovDetector at CLEO

We describe the particle identification capability of the CLEO RICH system. This system consists of a 1 cm thick LiF radiator coupled to a photon detector that uses wire proportional chambers filled with a mixture of CH4 and TEA. We discuss the yield of photoelectrons observed per ring and the angular resolution. We show the efficiencies achieved for particle identification and the associated f...
